Specific proteins are valuable markers for a variety of diseases including microbial infections, inflammatory response, cardiac risk and even cancer. The complement system is a family of proteins that is integral in the destruction of viruses and bacteria, and is a major part of the immune system. Abbott assays test proteins in this system, enabling diagnosis and monitoring of immune system conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis.
